| Justice Works Programs Program | Description | Newsletters | Check out our recent newsletters here. | ROOTS Educational Program | Our program of correspondence classes was created by and for incarcerated people. We have about 30 different classes and several more are on the way! About one third of these classes were created by incarcerated people. These courses are for people who want to learn and grow while in prison. Although they are not pen pals, we attempt to connect each student with an “outside partner” who provides feedback, encouragement and shares their experience with the class content. |
| Our Gifts for Kids program provides a day full of fun activities, a community meal and gifts for children of incarcerated people. The activities include things like face painting, making crafts, balloon animals and many more. There is live entertainment and open mic time! | Court Watch
| Court Watch provides citizen observers at the King County Courthouse for people accused of a crime. Our concern is not about innocence or guilt. Instead, we represent the value of providing for the fair and just treatment for all people. We believe that the court system should be accountable to citizens. And, if the accused is convicted, we add them to our newsletter distribution list and hope to keep them connected to the organization while they are incarcerated. Since Justice Works! knows that the criminal justice system is biased against African Americans, we attempt to provide courtroom observers because the criminal justice system should be equitable and just to all! Court Watch, When you say... YES!!!to being a Court Watch observer... When you say YES to being a Justice Works! court watch observer you are part of a group who come together because they want a court system that is equitable, just to all and accountable to the citizens. You don't need to say anything. You don't need any special legal knowledge. You don't even need to know the defendant or the case. Court watch observers are there to observe the system, not to judge each case! Youth volunteers are welcome. Court-ordered community service volunteers are accepted. There are no requirements for volunteers. There are no limitations on who may volunteer. The minimum age for this opportunity is 16 years and older. Check out this Volunteer Opportunity! | Business Send Off Program | As defined in our vision statement, Justice Works! is about self determination. And, as described in our Funding Approach document, Justice Works! chooses financial self sufficiency. Delancey Street, based in San Francisco, is a dynamic and very successful organization which is an inspirational example of how organizational self sufficiency promotes individual self determination. JW! Business Sendoff Projects (BSP) are one part of the JW! funding approach that allows us to “walk the JW! talk”. BSPs integrate our funding efforts with all aspects of our work. While considered a “school”, each BSP is run as a separate business. While financial reporting is done by and through BSP participants, each is managed as a separate entity.
